More Details on January 2nd Armored Car Robbery
A recently released police report has additional details about a January 2nd armored car robbery in South Seattle.
According to the report, a guard working for an armored car company was walking out of the Auto Zone near Rainier Ave S and Seward Park Ave S at about 11:15 a.m. carrying a bag with more than $7,000 in cash when a man—described by police as a "black male, late 20's to 30's in age, 5'-7" to 5'-10", 200-230 lbs, wearing a white tank top and blue jeans, short or tight curly afro hair—approached the guard outside of the store and grabbed the bag.
As the two men struggled, the guard drew a handgun, but the thief was able to wrestle the bag away from him and flee. The guard did not chase after the man and did not fire his weapon because, as he later told police, he did not feel physically threatened.
Police were called, and SPD K9 units tried to track the thief, but were unsuccesful.
Officers interviewed employees at the Auto Zone who say they did not witness the robbery. However, while police were at the scene, an Auto Zone staff member told police that another received a "suspicious phone call" from another employee who had called the store several minutes after the incident and asked if there had been a robbery. The staff member "found this suspicious because the robbery had not been on the news and they wondered how he heard about it," the report says. Police contacted the employee, who told officers that "a friend of his son or daughter saw the police activity there and called him asking if he was involved."
The police report says the thief made off with a total of $7,189.85.
