A King County Superior Court judge was injured in court this morning when an angry defendant attacked the judge with his shoe.

According to King County Prosecutor's office spokesman Dan Donohoe, the man, Abdi Ali Abukar, was in court at about 8:30 this morning for a competency hearing on 2008 charges for robbery, burglary, and weapons possession. 

During the hearing, a court incident report says, Abukar became agitated, began speaking loudly, and told his attorney he “needed to get out of jail.” Abukar then removed his jail-issued rubber sandal and hurled it across the courtroom at Judge Palmer Robinson, striking her in the face. King County jail records indicate Abukar was booked into jail in August 2008.

Courtroom security quickly got things under control and took Abukar away. According to King County Sheriff's office spokesman John Urquhart, a King County detective was also in the court room at the time, and the county may pursue assault charges against Abukar.

Judge Robinson was not seriously injured in the assault.
