Police Investigating Shooting In Central District

By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee December 8, 2009

A man's confrontation with gang members in the Central District ended in gunfire last week, a police report says.

According to a police report, a man was walking to the store at 12th and Jefferson around 11:30 p.m. last Monday when a group of men surrounded him and asked him for a cigarette. The man broke a cigarette in half and one of the men pulled a gun and demanded money. The man ran from the group until he heard a gunshot and felt pain on the top of his head.

Medics treated the man at the scene for the wound on his head and police searched the area for suspects. The man told police he believed he had been assaulted by gang members, based on the "handshakes and hand-signals" the men in the group were giving each other. Near the scene, officers found a silver .38 revolver in a dumpster. The gun was loaded with five unfired rounds and one spent casing. Police were unable to locate any bullets fired from the gun.

While police searched the area, they spotted two men with "long-standing gang affiliations" who matched the description of the men involved in the attack. For reasons unclear in the report, police were unable to get the victim to come and identify the men, who were then released.
