New Planned Parenthood Ads Size Up Health Care Reform

Local Planned Parenthood began running cable TV ads yesterday in Seattle and Tacoma and the eastside suburbs that protest the health care reform bill. The bill sets up barriers and puts restrictions on abortion.

The ad focuses on the House Stupak amendment which prevents anyone who receives public subsidies from purchasing a plan that covers abortion; stops any public option—there’s a public option in the House plan—from covering abortion; and makes it impossible for insurance companies covering abortions to offer a plan to both subsidized and unsubsidized individuals—creating an abortion ban within the new health care system.

The ad doesn't, however, take a shot at the Nelson deal—the senate version of Stupak. Named after  Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.), the deal gives states the option of prohibiting abortion coverage in government exchange plans and mandates that insurance companies establish two different systems if they want to offer comprehensive care for women.

Given that heavy Democratic majorities in both the senate and house crafted the health care reform bill (Stupak and Nelson are both Democrats), the ad seems to miss the larger context of what just happened.

Curiously, the ad only takes on the local GOP, namechecking eastside Rep. Dave Reichert (R-WA, 8) in particular.
