County Contradictions

By Erica C. Barnett December 3, 2009

A couple of days ago, the Municipal League of King County released a report on land use regulations in King County that concluded, in part, that cities are overrepresented on the King County Council, at the expense of rural areas.

"King County provides zoning and permitting to unincorporated citizens as their local government, yet more than 80% of council members’ constituents live in cities. This pattern weakens representation for unincorporated residents and suggests the need for structural reforms granting them greater influence over decisions which directly affect them," the report found.

Earlier this year, the Muni League released another report about county government—this one recommending, among other things, that the council ditch the  controversial "40/40/20" formula that allocates most new service to rural and suburban areas, even though most people live in cities.

I wonder which one of these pressing issues of representation the council will take up first?
