Central District Car Prowler Tells Cops He Did It Because He "Was Bored"

By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee December 2, 2009

Every so often when going through police reports, you come across a refreshingly candid interaction between a cop and a criminal.

Shortly after 4:00 a.m. on November 22nd, police received a call from a witness who spotted a man in his 20s break into a car and steal a backpack near 17th Ave and E Cherry Street.

Police arrived and found a man matching that description riding on a bicycle along 17th Ave. The man turned on to Marion Street and police pulled him over.

An officer asked the man "Why are you breaking into cars?" and the man candidly answered "Because I was bored." Even though the man had admitted to car prowling, he then told police he'd only taken the backpack and not broken into the car. However, the witness who reported the incident identified the man as the car prowler.

On the ride back to the precinct, the report says the officer spoke to the man and said "You kind of pissed me off.  The witness saw you smash the window. Why did you lie to me?"  The man told him "Because I thought you'd be mad."

The report notes that the man was recently released from the Maple Lane Juvenile Institution where he'd been held for burglary.
