Cajun Export

By Jonathan Cunningham December 10, 2009

Okay, everyone knows that New Orleans—birthplace of jazz and zydeco and second-line brass band music—is Louisiana's music export hub. But if you venture a couple of hours outside of N'awlins, you'll enter Cajun country. And they've got something to export too: Bayou blues.

One of the most prominent figures to come out of that scene is guitarist Tab Benoit. He's sort of a cross between guitar legends Stevie Ray Vaughn and Albert King. Whether he's onstage or in the studio, he's got the ability to get funky and play lightning fast blues riffs. But he can also bring a down-home, country music sensibility to his tunes.

His critically drooled-over 2002 album Wetlands is one of the most authentic forays into Cajun and swamp blues ever recorded. Aside from the fact that he's a mini guitar god and can practically make the instrument talk or cry when he plays, he's also a big environmentalist, getting behind efforts to preserve Louisiana's wetlands.

You can catch the revered green bluesman  in person tonight. He's playing  at the Highway 99 Blues Club at 1414 Alaskan Way. The show starts at 9 .m. Tickets are $18.
