Adventures in Mid-90s Pop Culture

By Chris Kissel December 28, 2009

1. It seems to be a quiet week overall in the city, but a musical event tonight titled  "Winter Wonderfuck" is sure to provide a healthy dose of bargain-basement Seattle rock and roll. Headlining the bill are The Girls (not to be confused with Girls
), a fairly-fierce 70s-Britpunk throwback, who've been around for about the last decade. The Fags, who've been around about 25 years, will be masquerading as a band called "The Spooges," and will play only Iggy Pop covers. And then there's The 79ers, which includes members from, among other bands, the Frazz--a Seattle party band from the actual '70s.

Tonight at 8 pm, at the High Dive in Fremont. Admission is $6.

2. The Tasting Room is a "cooperative tasting cellar" owned jointly by several local wineries, in Post Alley at Pike Place Market. Beecher's is the crazy-awesome cheese place across the street. On Mac and Cheese Mondays, the two joints combine forces, and the Tasting Room serves up a fat plate of the good stuff along with their usual wine selections.

Mac and cheese from 5 pm to 7 pm, at 1924 Post Alley.

3. Porchlight is my favorite new coffee shop. It's a small place, it's always quiet, the coffee is decent, and there's a great selection of records for sale in back (including a healthy stack from Seattle-based soul reissuers Light in the Attic Records).

A fresh little band called "your heart breaks," a Kimya Dawson-meets-the-Velvet-Underground outfit that sings mostly about being gay and having adventures in mid-90s pop culture, is playing a free, all-ages gig at Porchlight tonight. Sounds like the perfect opportunity to check out both the place and the band.

Tonight at 7 pm, at Porchlight Coffee + Records, at 1515 14th Ave.

4. The confoundingly spelled Metropolitain Cafe is hosting this year's annual "Anything But Clothes" raffle/party/'80s night/drag show/costume contest benefiting Lambert House, a gay youth community center on Capitol Hill. Raffle auction items include gift certificates for Purr, HomeMaid Seattle, and Chao Bistro; gift bags from Babeland and Retail Therapy; and surprise gifts from Square Room gallery, Atlas Clothing, and Gay City Health Project.

Tonight starting at 8:30 pm at Metropolitain Cafe, 1701 East Olive Way. Free; donations benefit Lambert House. RSVP here.
