Keep it Classy, Horsey

Here's Pulitzer Prize-winning Seattle P-I cartoonist David Horsey's response to Boeing's decision to move its 787 production line to South Carolina:

Here we have: A confederate flag, an upside-down sign reading, "Up" ('cause the Sutherners, they dumb, y'all!), a bunch of redneck workers who clearly have no idea how to build an airplane*, characters speaking in stereotypical "white trash" dialect, an outhouse (they ain't got no plumbin' down thar, ya know), and a still for moonshine.

And—just in case you don't get it (everyone in the South is DUMB! And RACIST!)—Horsey also threw in a noose
for good measure.

If Boeing had moved its line to Mexico, would we see a cartoon showing a fat guy in a sombrero sleeping under the plane, empty bottle of tequila in hand? If they'd gone to China, would the dialect be in "Engrish," the workers robotic stereotypes of Asian communists? If they'd moved to the Middle East, would they all be terrorists?

And if not, why is it OK to paint Southerners with such an arrogant, intolerant, bigoted brush?

* Yes, there have been delays due to supply-chain problems in Charleston. That's a good reason to support unionization, not an excuse for bigotry.
