A Whitman Middle School student told police that he believes he was assaulted outside the schoo last week after another teen mistook him for a rival gang member.

The student was waiting at a bus stop in front of the school when another teen—about 15-years-old, the report says—wearing a black coat, black hat, and black pants apprached him and said "why are you wearing a blue hat?" The teen took a swing at the student, knocking him to the ground. While on the ground, the 15-year-old continued to punch the teen in the face. The teen was able to get up and flee, leaving his hat behind.

The teen told police he believes he was assaulted because the other boy believed he was a member of the Crips gang. Before the assault, the teen saw the 15-year-old with several other young men, who were all dressed in red and black clothing. "He believes they are members of the Bloods [gang]" the report says.
