50-Percent-Plus Turnout Likely, Numbers Suggest

By Erica C. Barnett November 5, 2009

Some stats while you're waiting for the (late) 4:30 election results: If the ballot return in King County and Seattle so far is any indication, total turnout is likely to end up at or above 50 percent, easily.

As of yesterday, the county reported that it had received (or "processed") 164,113 ballots in Seattle, for a turnout so far of about 43.52 percent.*

That means we only need about another 25,000 ballots (that is, 6.5 percent) to get to 50 percent total turnout. Although the number of ballots "processed" is likely to decline each day (that's what it has been doing), it's not unlikely that the total turnout will end up around 55 percent, or close to the 56 percent King County Elections predicted.

*As of yesterday, there were about 24,000 votes outstanding (the difference between the number that had been "processed" and the number that had been tallied). Adding that number to the 27,650 ballots received from Seattle yesterday works out to around 52,000 Seattle ballots sitting at King County Elections, but not yet counted.
