Massive Greenwood Fire Ruled Arson, Police Investigating Several Other North End Fires
The Seattle Fire Department has determined that a three alarm blaze in Greenwood, which destroyed three businesses on October 23rd, was the result of arson.
SFD says the fire—which caused $2 million in damage—was set inside of the Green Bean Coffee House, and later spread to the C.C. Teriyaki and Pho Tic Tac restaurants, and the nearby Taproot Theater. The restaurants and coffee shop were destroyed in the fire.
Police had already been investigating several fires which were set in the Greenwood area in August.
Police and firefighters were also called to deal with several set fires in the University District over the weekend.
At about 10:45 p.m. on October 24th, a woman living in the 5200 block of 19th Avenue NE called police to report that someone had set a fire on her front porch.
According to a police report, the woman told officers that someone knocked on her door late at night. When she opened the door, the report says, she found a flaming grocery bag on her porch. The woman put out the fire and called police, who were unable to locate any suspects. The report notes that "a large number of college-age people were present in...the area due to UW Homecoming Week."
The next evening, just after midnight, police and fire department units were dispatched to deal with dumpster fire in an alley in the 4200 block of 12th Avenue NE. The fire was extinguished and the department's fire/bomb squad unit was called in to investigate.
