Mallahan Spokeswoman: Joe Didn't "Come Out Against" Parking Tax

By Erica C. Barnett September 24, 2009

Charla Neuman, spokeswoman for mayoral candidate Joe Mallahan, called this afternoon to say that opponent Mike McGinn's press release this afternoon—in which McGinn said Mallahan had come out against Seattle's commercial parking tax during an appearance on KUOW earlier this week—was inaccurate. "I have not heard him say that," Neuman said.

However, Neuman could not clarify what Mallahan's actual position on the parking tax is, saying only, "I don't have him here next to me to ask him that."

Here's what Mallahan had to say on KUOW (emphasis mine):

My goal would be to keep taxes as low as possible for residents and businesses alike. I've gotten a lot of feedback from small business owners that the current parking tax has become so onerous that people outside Seattle have chosen not to come here.

I do think, when we think about our tourism industry, the most important tourist is the tourist from Issaquah or Redmond or Bellevue... We're competing with Bellevue, with all the tony shops and new restaurants that are opening, and Bellevue loves to tout how all the parking is free.

I'm not saying we can get there. ... My point is that before we can consider additional taxes, we have to think of all the implications, and I believe we have to make sure Seattle is competitive economically. ... The overall cost of coming to Seattle should be considered carefully.
