Learn About Islam Tonight

By Josh Feit September 21, 2009

I picked up a great new book last week at Bailey-Coy on Capitol Hill—After the Prophet: The Epic Story of the Shia-Sunni Split in Islam by Lesley Hazleton.

I'm only half way through—Aisha, Muhammad's favorite wife (a kick ass proto-feminist) has amassed an army outside Basra and is in a standoff with Ali (Muhammad's cousin and son-in-law and finally, Muhammad's successor) who has also amassed an army outside Basra.

This is a gripping opera-of-a-tale—the Caliph before Ali, Othman, was just assassinated by Ali's stepson—and it comes with giant ramifications for the contemporary world.

It turns out Hazleton is from Seattle. And better: She's reading tonight at the University Temple United Methodist Church, 1415 NE 43rd St at 7pm. $3 donation.
