Extra Fizz: Cascade Endorses McGinn

Cascade Bicycle Club, which supported incumbent mayor Greg Nickels in the August 18 primary, has thrown its support behind Seattle Great City Initiative founder Mike McGinn in the general election, citing his "strong record of standing up for bicycling, walking and transit," his work fighting against the highway-heavy 2007 roads and transit ballot measure, and his advocacy for the 2006 Bridging the Gap and 2008 parks levies. Nickels lost in the primary.
Back in July, Cascade justified its support for Nickels—arguably a less passionate advocate for bike and pedestrian issues than McGinn—by noting Nickels's strong support for bike infrastructure as mayor. "It's our official policy never to go against a friendly incumbent," Cascade policy director David Hiller told me at the time. "McGinn's running against an incumbent who has a history of support. [Nickels has] without a doubt embraced the most aggressive bike program of any of mayor in the city's history."
