Expenditure of the Day

By Erica C. Barnett September 11, 2009

Forward Seattle, a two-year-old PAC funded by businesses and developers (the Building Owners and Managers Association, the Master Builders Association, the Washington Association of Realtors, and Vulcan, among others) to advocate for city candidates, just paid two firms $16,000 to do polling on behalf of unspecified city candidates.

Although neither of Forward Seattle's two founders, lobbyists Joe Quintana and Don Stark, would say on whose behalf the research was done, there are only a few possibilities.

It could be landlord Robert Rosencrantz, running as the conservative for council Position 8 against environmentalist Mike O'Brien—but Rosencrantz finished the primary far behind O'Brien, who received 35 percent to Rosencrantz's 21 percent.  $16,000 on Rosencrantz is risky.

It could be either Joe Mallahan or Mike McGinn, both of whom hold some business-friendly positions; but it seems like the business community would wait to see which of the two has the momentum before committing cash.

Finally, it could be Sally Bagshaw, running for Position 4 against ultra lefty David Bloom; but Bloom finished far behind his rival, with 18 percent to Bagshaw's 51 percent—and so, it's not clear she needs a ton of help.

In other words: It's anybody's guess. Obviously, the list of candidates above wouldn't be able to answer the question about Forward Seattle because campaigns are prohibited by law from coordinating with outside groups.
