Contribution(s) of the Day

By Erica C. Barnett September 1, 2009

Who gives money to an incumbent mayor who just got knocked out of the race for reelection in the primary? Thanks to the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission, we know.

Since election day, lame-duck Mayor Greg Nickels has received nearly $7,000 from supporters; as of his last detailed report on August 10, Nickels was a little more than $1,600 in debt.

Late contributors to Nickels include Laura and Yale Wong, VP and CEO of Seattle-based General Biodiesel, respectively; James Keblas, director of the Mayor's Office of Film and Music; Homesight executive director Tony To; and Columbia Legal Services attorney Daniel Ford.

Keblas, interestingly, was the only city of Seattle employee who contributed to Nickels ($100) after the election. City of Seattle employees, after "not employed," make up by far the largest percentage of contributors to Nickels—about $65,000 before the election, out of more than half a million dollars.

Keblas has not yet returned a call for comment about why he's the city's lone pro-Nickels holdout.
