Bumbershoot Books: We Did Porn
Visual artist Zak Smith first made a name for himself in the literary world in 2004 with his series, "Pictures of What Happens on Each Page of Thomas Pynchon's Novel Gravity's Rainbow." Now he's written a book of his own. We Did Porn
, a memoir, chronicles his time in the L.A. alt-porn world (as "Zak Sabbath").
I picked up a copy of We Did Porn recently at Elliott Bay, and I can't wait to hear him talk about it. Smith is a great storyteller, pulling together conversations with porn artists, anecdotes about particular movies or scenes, and essays on everything from art and porn to religion. He has a singular, funny voice that's observant but not mean (at least not that I've seen so far) and his art-world background gives him a unique angle.
Interspersed with the writing are more than 100 ink sketches and paintings by Smith: Half-naked women on notebook paper never looked so elegant. (Slide show here.)
