Bumbershoot Books: Manic D

By BookNerd September 4, 2009

For my last Bumbershoot pick I'm going with the Manic D Press panel on Monday. There are many reasons to go to this panel—including hearing from publisher Jen Joseph how she's kept the indie press vital for the last 25 years. But my main reason for picking it today is curiosity about Amber Tamblyn.

The star of Joan of Arcadia (a 16-year-old girl gets assignments from God, who appears to her in different forms—as a cute boy, for example) and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
apparently also writes some dark, cynical poetry about being a young actress. I've been enjoying the poems from her new book from Manic D, Bang Ditto. Tamblyn seems like an honest and worthy correspondent from the world of teen Hollywood, and the poems have a sort of voyeuristic appeal, despite the occasional cringe factor that comes with lines like "under my dried tabloid-puke eyes."

It would also be amazing to see queer-punk star and award-winning author Lynnee Breedlove (Lynnee Breedlove's One Freak Show, Godspeed
) and Manic D regular Jon Longhi (The Rise and Fall of Third Leg, Wake Up and Smell the Beer). See, lots of reasons to go.
