Re: Ted Kennedy

By Josh Feit August 26, 2009

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) issued a heartfelt statement on her former colleague Sen. Ted Kennedy this morning. (Posted below.)

We called the office of former Washington state Republican U.S. Senator Slade Gorton to see if he had a statement as well.

Gorton was in the U.S. Senate from 1981-2001, so he probably has some keen insights about Kennedy, particularly on the rap making the media rounds this morning that despite Kennedy's public image as a stubborn liberal, his fellow senators actually considered him a consummate bipartisan dealmaker.

True?

Oddly—at least I found it odd—Gorton's office first told me he was tied up in meetings all day, so he couldn't issue a statement, and then, when I said I'd love to hear his thoughts anytime, tomorrow would be good, his office told me he "wasn't interested" in issuing a statement on the news.

Here's Sen. Murray's press release:
