Citizens to Uphold the Constitution—formerly known as FAIRPAC—is putting nearly $18,000 into an independent expenditure hitting Susan Hutchison, the former KIRO anchor and a Republican candidate for King County Executive, for her refusal to reveal her views on abortion.
The group is funded by progressive organizations including the NARAL Pro-Choice Washington, Planned Parenthood Votes!, and the Washington State Council of City and County Employees.
The $18K will pay for phone calls and a mailing by Moxie Media, a local firm that also worked with the group to defeat conservative judicial challengers in 2006.
According to Planned Parenthood political director Dana Laurent, the calls and mail will focus on "the fact that King County Public Health has nine family planning clinics that are on the verge of closure, [which] could leave tens of thousands of people in the county without access to basic family planning services—and yet Ms. Hutchison refuses to address any number of issues around reproductive health care and supported right-wing politicians," like Mike Huckabee and George W. Bush.
As we reported a few weeks ago, Hutchison has consistently refused to state her position on choice, claiming that "The issues surrounding abortion are not relevant to the King County Executive race."
All but one of the nine clinics that are threatened with closure provide services including birth control, pregnancy testing, STD testing and treatment, and abortion information and referrals. In 2007, the clinics providing family planning services to 17,200 people.
