Eric Nusbaum here.

It's a great night for first-place mayoral finisher Mike McGinn.

Although the McGinn event at Havana on Capitol Hill started out looking much like a typical after-work happy hour—a dim  room filled with a young crowd, no palpable tension—the group quickly began to resemble a crowd at a sporting event: Cheers and boos, chants of the word "scoreboard", groans at any appearance of Nickels or Mallahan, and a stadium buzz.

UPDATE: After the results came in and the mild hysteria died down, a frantic blond staffer started walking around the bar whispering to fellow staff and volunteers to go outside. "McGinn's coming, McGinn's coming." Soon the whole bar had emptied into the parking lot, drinks in hand, and stood watching the street, waiting for the man himself to arrive. A few moments later, he emerged with his family around a corner and cheers greeted him. He gave his speech in the parking lot.

UPDATE 2: The candidate himself remains stuck in the parking lot, surrounded by camera after camera. It's been about twenty or thirty minutes since he first arrived, but he still hasn't made it into his own party. The tech guy running the projector and television is posting clever and sometimes unclever ("scoreboard," "yeah Team McGinn!") messages over the results, and getting raucous responses. It's going to be a long night in McGinn camp, and for the supporters here, that's a good thing.
