About that KING 5 Poll
Some folks in the comments to my post about a new KING-5/SurveyUSA mayoral poll questioned whether Survey USA's polling actually does skew younger than the vote in the primary election.
Today, SurveyUSA released detailed information about its poll, which reveals that about 22 percent of respondents were between 18 and 34; 32 percent were between 35 and 49; 26 percent were between 50 and 64; and 18 percent were 65 or older.
Although it's hard to find exact data on how many of each of those groups vote in primary elections, data from last year's top-two primary suggests that the electorate is, in fact, much older than SurveyUSA's sample. That year, voters between 18 and 24 years old made up between two and five percent of all those who voted, depending on the county; those aged 65 and older made up between 27 percent and 47 percent of those who voted.
Here's why that's important: Older voters skew heavily toward Mallahan and away from Nickels; and younger voters skew slightly toward Nickels and away from Mallahan—meaning that the poll could be even better news for Mallahan than previously reported.
