Red Flags and Labels

1. We had two nice scoop-olas here at PubliCola yesterday. I'm happy to report that The Stranger
picked up on one of them—the story about a public disclosure request for the names of members of the GLBT group at Seattle Public Utilities.

But I'd like the mainstream press to pick up on the other story—Susan Hutchison, the former KIRO-TV anchor who's running for King County Executive as a non-partisan independent, has hired someone with a hotly partisan resume (as in right wing) to be her campaign manager.

Here's why I'd like the mainstream media to pick up on the story that Hutchison has hired someone with a hotly partisan resume (as in right wing) to be her campaign manager: Because I want Hutchison to answer questions about it. And while I did call Hutchison for my story yesterday, she never called back. (I've called her for other stories as well, and she's never called me back.)

I think the mainstream media will have better  luck getting her to call back, and I'd  like her to explain why, if she's such an independent, she hired such a partisan operative.

The PI.com did, in fact, publish a big story on Hutchison this morning
, but it looks like their story was in the can and ready-to-go before we reported the news about her campaign manager (he's worked for Mike Huckabee and Sen. Sam Brownback). The PI did drop that info into their story, but they did not ask her directly about it.

Asked in general about her GOP ties, Hutchison said: "I don't think labels are helpful."

2. According to campaign finance reports, Jan Drago has only raised $1,350 and she only has six donors. She reported the money on June 1, a week after her big announcement—and several weeks after she'd made it clear to the press that she was in. Coming out with such a small list of names and such a small take after such a big build up seems like a red flag to me.

3. At what seemed like a major campaign event, Democratic King County Council Member Bob Ferguson, who's running unopposed for reelection this year (he's raised $92,000), held a packed campaign kickoff breakfast yesterday morning at the Convention Center. State Democratic Party Chair Dwight Pelz spoke and joked that Ferguson, 44, would be the party's Gubernatorial candidate in 2020.
