The Sounders' Unholy Trinity

By Chris Kissel May 15, 2009

[Chris K.'s note: On this week's SportsNerd, commenter "BeerNotWar" left us this cheery little note: "The NBA is dead to me, and should be to anyone who was a fan of the Sonics. Please follow sports that matter to Washingtonians."

The Sounders have a big week coming up, and I've narrowed down all the challenges our team will face as they take on sad-looking FC Dallas to three major points: red cards, heat, and their own arrogance.

My first challenge, and the one reason the Sounders are second in their division at 4-2-2: Red cards.

Keller's red card gave us a loss against Kansas City. Fredy's red card gave us a tie against Kwawktemok. And I'll assume the same happened last week re: Riley and red card against Galaxy, although I didn't actually see the game. (Thanks, mom).

The only time the Sounders were really outplayed by the other team was against Chivas, so, skills-wise, we're actually 7-1-0, not 4-2-2.

So, no red cards. No hands outside the box, no elbows to his ear, no bad referees. If we manage that, then we can move on to worrying about challenge number two: the heat.

We're playing in Dallas, and the worst thing about Dallas is that it's Dallas--arguably the worst city in the world, but I digress. The second worst thing about Dallas is the heat. According to the weatherman, it's gonna be mid 70s with showers. (Hey, just like here! I wonder how often that happens?) If you're accustomed to playing soccer in never-too-hot, never-too-cold Seattle, the last thing you want to do play in the sweltering heat. But it looks like we may luck out in that department.

So, before we go on to Challenge #3, let's look at FC Dallas: they're at the bottom of the league with 1-6-1. They have no major million-dollar international stars. They don't have any major five-figure US stars. They're just a bunch of guys. I kinda almost feel sorry for them.

The 3rd biggest challenge tomorrow: don't get all cocky and arrogant. We should be at the top. We have an amazing team with sell-out crowds. We're playing a miserable lot in a wretched town. Let's not make any assumptions. Just keep away the red cards, and we should do fine.

And as an aside: Empirical evidence shows that more places are now showing the Sounders. I've been trying new venues every week: Kell's was overpriced and filled with non-soccer watching tourists; Fado was packed before and after the game, but oddly empty during; Bad Albert's and the Lock and Keel have it on and the drunk sailors don't seem too annoyed. Snoose Junction may or may not have children playing pin ball under the screen.

This week, I think I'll try the Loft in Ballard. Its fratty clientele and cheesy sports-bar environment makes me cringe, but it was packed for the Chicago game and has an outdoor deck.
