Reps. Inslee, McDermott Split with Delegation on War Vote

By Chris Kissel May 15, 2009

Reps. Jay Inslee (D-WA,1) and Jim McDermott (D-WA,7) voted against a measure earlier this week that appropriates $96 billion to fund upcoming offensives in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The rest of our delegation, the four Democrats and the two Republicans who were present for the vote, voted for the measure. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA,5) abstained.

I haven't yet been able to reach either office for a statement on the vote, but both legislators have been fervent critics of the Iraq war in recent years. McDermott and Inslee joined 49 other Democrats and nine Republicans in voting against the measure.

McDermott also voted against the Defense Appropriations bill passed down from the Senate on Wednesday, but with only nine Dems and one Republican backing him up this time. I reported on this bill yesterday. Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) attached an amendment to the bill that would have required the Defense Department to inform Congress of any impact defense-program cuts would have on contractors like Boeing and Lockheed. For those of you keeping score, Sen. Murray's amendment didn't appear to be included in the measure as it was agreed to by the House.
