Nickels to Plead Case in 34th District Tonight
We all know Mayor Greg Nickels is seriously unpopular—he's got a 15 percent reelect number according to Jan Drago's recent poll.
Tonight we might find out that it's even worse than that. Nickels is slated to meet with the 34th District Democrats executive board. The 34th District is Nickels home turf, West Seattle. If Nickels doesn't get the board's recommendation (as home boy Dow Constantine did in the King County Executive's race), ultimately getting the nod from his own district could be in jeopardy.
He only needs a simply majority of the board to get the E-board recommendation. But, it's expected to be a fight.
The way the 34th's endorsement process works is this: A candidate needs a two-thirds majority vote from the membership if they don't get the recommendation of the executive board. That'll be a tall order for Nickels who hasn't been active with the finicky group and has ran afoul of some members on issues like homeless encampments.
The executive board (about 20 members, including some pro-Nickels stalwarts—like City of Seattle Technology head, Bill Schrier—and some serious Nickels detractors) will issue its decision later tonight after they meet with Nickels.
No other candidates have scheduled meetings with the board, although they're allowed to. The 34th as a whole will make their decision in July.
Nickels did get the endorsement of the 11th District, South Seattle, last night.
