GOP's Preemptive Strike. Target: Inslee.
The National Republican Campaign Committee put Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA,1) on the spot last week over whether he would support a bill to block a possible transfer of Guantanamo detainees to domestic prisons.
Stirring up terrorists-in-the-neighborhood anxiety, the GOP refers to President Obama's decision to close the Guantanamo Bay prison as a "terrorist importation order," and asks "Where does Rep. Jay Inslee stand?" on legislation that would keep Obama from sending inmates to prisons across the country.
We've been reading the Democrats' ceaseless anti-Rep. Dave Reichert (R-WA,8) press releases like tea leaves, thinking maybe they had something to do with a possible Senate run from Reichert (which doesn't seem likely anymore given Sen. Patty Murray's giant status). However, it will be interesting to see whether the NRCC steps up its Inslee offensive as Inslee eyeballs Gov. Chris Gregoire's desk.
“Jay Inslee has the explicit duty to stand up and protect his constituents in the wake of Gitmo’s closing, which could allow dangerous terrorists to be imported to places like Washington State,” said NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain. “Will Jay Inslee defend the safety of the families in his district and stand up against this dangerous proposal or will he leave the security of American lives in the balance?”
If Rep. Jay Inslee supports this bill, he can stop these terrorists from being imported into his constituents’ backyard. But will he have the resolve to stand up to the president? Or will he stay silent in hopes of avoiding the repercussions by allowing the terrorists to be relocated to places like Washington state?
Inslee's office wasn't immediately available for comment this afternoon.
