On "Not Speaking" Terms

1. City Council candidate Mike O'Brien attended the Camp Wellstone training last weekend—the three-day campaign boot camp that's run by deceased lefty U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone's former political entourage.

Apparently, O'Brien learned this magic rule: Don't run against the candidates with the most money. Like everyone else, O'Brien—on Monday—jumped into the crowded race for Richard McIver's open seat, staying away from the race for Jan Drago's open seat—a small field, but one that stars leading fundraiser, former King County civil division chief, Sally Bagshaw.

With the exception of incumbent Richard Conlin, Bagshaw has raised the most cash so far— $52,000. That's about $10,000 more than the nearest competitor in any council race—and $20,000 more than O'Brien.

And there's more where that came from. Bagshaw used her contacts in the legal community to help raise money for colleague Dan Satterberg's impressive $491,000 K.C. Prosecutor's campaign in 2007.

2. The relationship between Gov. Chris Gregoire and Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown —which was already strained at the beginning of the session—reportedly ended on "not speaking" terms after Brown refused to bring Gregoire's climate change bill—which the Senate first passed in March and the House passed in mid-April—to a final concurrence vote. The "Governor's Request Bill" languished in the  Senate rules committee as the clock expired.

(Reportedly ticking off Sen. Brown? The bill she was obsessed with—the bill to amend I-937—was dead in the House.)

3. The PI.com published an in-depth interview yesterday with King County Council Member Dow Constantine, who's running for King County Executive. Among other things, Constantine criticizes K.C. Executive Sims for not dealing with the crisis at the K.C. Animal Shelter, and he calls the County's relationship with state government "terrible."

4. Speaking of the K.C. Executive's race, State Rep. Ross Hunter (D-48, Medina) is likely to announce his candidacy this week, maybe as soon as today.
