Richard Thomas played football at University of Washington during those heady years of the early '90s, though the running back might be best remembered for helping end Miami’s record 58-game home winning streak back in 1994. He was still a student when he married Christie Dammarell, his high school girlfriend who went on to be a UW cheerleader. Today the couple has three children; Thomas played briefly for the Ravens after college, but found a post-football calling as a motivational speaker, in addition to other jobs. But last July, Christie suffered a brain aneurysm at age 39 that required major surgery. A second brain hemorrhage resulted in a second surgery.

Today Christie Thomas is unable to communicate verbally and lives in a long-term care facility. Yesterday the folks at Taste at SAM sent word they are partnering with Richard Thomas to hold a benefit dinner and silent auction to raise funds for the family, specifically for everyday needs for the Thomases’ three children, 19-year-old MaRyann, Richard Lee, 16, and Payton, 10.

Thomas's longtime teammate Ernie Conwell will emcee the event, happening Sunday, April. Register and donate right over here
