The Whoopie Pie Bakeoff Returns to Oddfellows

Whoopie pies never did become the Next Big Thing in Baked Goods, as various lifestyle publications promised they would. But no matter, they still offer ample creative fodder for ambitious bakers. Those bakers will have a chance to show off their skills on July 12, when Oddfellows hosts a reprise of the whoopie pie bakeoff it debuted last year. (Forgotten all about that? No matter. Nosh Pit was there to document the occasion for all of posterity.)
The 2011 entries will be evaluated by nine judges—apparently last year’s arbiters of whoopie goodness, of which there were five, felt a bit barfy by the end of things. And so this year, three judges will decide a winner in each of these three categories: professional bakers, home bakers, and gluten-free/vegan bakers.
Bakers interested in entering should contact [email protected]. But if all you’re after is the opportunity to eat free whoopie pies, show up around 2pm—a people’s choice award will be voted upon by the crowd.
