There’s Still Time to Enjoy Apple Season

Washington lays claim to myriad novelties—Pike Place Market, being the only U.S. state named for a president, Mt. Rainier—but how bout dem apples? This here is the core (!) growing region for a stellar stock of chin-drippers—and now’s the time to take advantage of it.
The end of September really is prime apple time, but considering this unseasonably awesome October, and that certain varieties—Cripps Pink, Cameo, Braeburn—are ripest around Halloween, there’s still occasion to fete the harvest. Some suggestions:
Pay a visit to Stutzman Ranch. The Wenatchee grower is one of the area’s best, and though their pick-them-yourself season is over, the fruit stands are still stocked by the boatloads and are open until October 31. Perfect for say, making pie.
Or, have someone else make you pie. Chris Porter of A la Mode Pies (from a trustworthy taster: "His pies just f’ing ROCK.") has a seasonal nine-inch apple-and-pear one, which costs $25 and is delivered to your door for free. There’s also a French apple variety, which stays on the menu year-round, but the former will be on hand just a couple more months.
