Poussin Tikka Masala, anyone?

May 17, 2010

Poussin is one of those words that’s always stumping American diners in France. They’ll scan a menu looking for poulet, the french word for chicken, and find only poussin, which refers to a young chicken raised to be slaughtered and consumed at a tender age.

Further confounding the matter is that poussin looks a lot like poisson, the word for fish. The French are forever coming up with such clever ways to confuse us, n’est ce pas?

Here in the States I believe that poussin and game hen are used pretty much interchangeably.

Closer to home, you’ll find the word poussin on the menu at the new Marjorie, set to open tomorrow, Tuesday, May 18 in the Chloe Building on Capitol Hill. The poussin will be served in a Tikka Masala sauce and comes accompanied by naan. Yum.
