Scharpling and Wurster
In an era before podcasts, comedy nerds looking for audio chatter clung to the absurdity of The Best Show. While shows featured comedian guests and actual calls from actual listeners, the show’s signature element was host Tom Scharpling exasperatedly wading through calls from the bizarre residents of the fictional town of Newbridge, New Jersey (all voiced by his partner in crime Jon Wurster, known in rock circles as the drummer for the Mountain Goats, Superchunk, and Bob Mould). During its life on New Jersey's WFMU, the show became a comedy nerd cult classic, and has since transitioned into a weekly podcast. Now Scharpling and Wurster hit the road in support of The Best Show’s new expansive 16-CD box set. Neumos, $25
Aug 27–29
Laurie Kilmartin
If you needed a resume to do standup, Laurie Kilmartin would be set. After 20 years of performing in San Francisco and New York, Kilmartin now works in L.A. as a writer for Conan. That’s in addition to doing stand up at local clubs 3–4 times a week (last year she taped her comedy special, 45 Jokes About My Dead Dad). This week, she takes her talents to Seattle’s Comedy Underground for a three-night stint with Christian Spicer. Comedy Underground, $12-$20

Concerts at the Mural: Swingin’ Roadhouse Night
With fall rapidly approaching, there are only so many chances left to catch free outdoor music in Seattle this summer. Close out your week with the season’s last installment of KEXP’s Concerts at the Mural series. Rocky Votolato
Seattle singer-songwriter only needs an acoustic guitar and his voice to captivate an audience, but that setup doesn't fully showcase the musical depth that his albums feature. There's only so much one man can do. So he has recruited a little help. After debuting his latest album Hospital Handshakes with a solo record release show at Fremont Abbey in April, Votolato heads to the Crocodile to fully flesh out the sound with a rare full band performance. The Crocodile, $15
Sat & Sun, Aug 29 & 30
Sublime with Rome
Nearly two decades after its release, the eponymous album Sublime still serves as a touchstone album for musical tokers. While original singer Bradley Nowell has passed, Sublime with Rome still lights up the stage with the warm glow of nostalgia for hits like “What I Got” and “Santeria.” Who ever said smoking had a negative effect on memory? Marymoor Park, $40
