Monday Morning Pick-Me-Up: Chris Walla's Return
WALLA WALLA
It's been almost a year since Chris Walla's final performance with Death Cab for Cutie, and last week the musician and producer finally unveiled his latest musical endeavor. On October 16, he'll release Tape Loops, his second solo album. It's a 5-song record of atmospheric instrumental music that relies heavily on manually manipulating analog tape. Via a conversation with Sara Quin (of Tegan and Sara) in Interview, Walla shared"Kanta's Theme"—the first track from Tape Loops—and discussed the new music, his recent move from Seattle to Norway (!), and his departure from Death Cab.
THE SOUND OF FALLING TIMBER
It wasn't exactly pretty, but the Seattle Sounders picked up a huge win against the rival Portland Timbers on Sunday at CenturyLink Field. Despite the defense and goalie Stefan Frei facing constant pressure, the the home team prevailed thanks to two less than aesthetically pleasing goals. The first came via a cluster scrum in the Timbers' box that saw Obafemi Martins cleaning up the mess, and the second arrived via a Brad Evans penalty kick after a somewhat questionable foul when Timbers goalie Adam Kwarasey couldn't get out of the way of a run by Martins. But hey, goals are goals, and the win keeps the Sounders on the positive side of the MLS Western Conference playoff race.

EXCITING MEANINGLESSNESS
The Seahawks finally won a preseason game! (Stop burning your 12 jerseys in the street accordingly.) While I again stress that NFL preseason games are garbage sporting events that only really exist so owners can squeeze their fans for full price tickets to see future practice squad players slam into each other, the closest thing these fake football contests can offer to a real game is pressure kicking situations. To that end, Seahawks fans were rather overjoyed when Steven Hauschka nailed a 60-yard field goal with seconds remaining to clinch a 16-15 victory over the Chargers on Saturday.
