The Six Best Moments in King Felix’s Amazing Year
Later this afternoon Major League Baseball will announce the 2014 Cy Young winners, and the Mariners’ Felix Hernandez is one of three finalists for the American League award. Should King Felix take home the prize—and most prognosticators think he will—it’ll be the second of his career, which would make him just the 18th pitcher in history to win more than once. As we wait for the announcement, let’s take a look back at some of the most memorable moments in the Year of the King.
5.23.14 – Less than two months into the season Hernandez flashes a little leather, snagging a sharp comebacker and turning two. The M’s ace would go on to pitch eight innings and pick up his sixth win of the season.
6.8.14 – Felix would ultimately walk away from this game against the Tampa Bay Rays with a no-decision, but he does fan 15—a personal best.
7.15.14 – After going 11-2 through the first half of the season, Hernandez is named the American League starter in the 85th All-Star Game. In one inning, he gives up no hits and fans two, and the AL goes on to win 5-3.
8.11.14 - Baseball statisticians define a "quality start" as at least six innings with no more than three runs given up. In 2014, King Felix set an MLB record with 16 straight quality starts, a streak that culminated in an 11-1 win over Toronto.
9.18.14 – It was a season of records for Hernandez. In his antepenultimate start he K'd 11, breaking his previous record for strikeouts in a season of 232.
9.28.14 Headed into the final game of the season, the Mariners could have squeaked into the playoffs had the Oakland A’s lost. They didn’t, so with the postseason out of reach M’s manager Lloyd McClendon pulled Hernandez in the sixth so the hometown crowd could send him off in style.
Just give him the award already.
