The Real Hero Behind Kenneth Bae’s Release Is… Dennis Rodman?

The Worm turns.

By Matthew Halverson November 10, 2014

By now you've no doubt heard that Kenneth Bae is home. The Lynnwood resident had been sentenced to 15 years in a North Korea prison for allegedly trying to plan a religious coup d'etat, but he only ended up serving two. Which, given the previous failed attempts by United States diplomats to secure his return, made news of his release over the weekend a bit of a surprise.

Slightly more surprising? Dennis Rodman says it was his doing. On Saturday, the former NBA star and current body modification–enthusiast released a letter to TMZ that he claims to have sent to Kim Jong Un to request clemency for Bae. "I ask for your mercy to prisoner Kenneth Bae and would be eternally grateful for his safe return and make a big step towards bridging the gap between our two nations."

Rodman and the Supreme Leader became BFFs (sort of?) after Rodman made a couple trips to North Korea in 2013. And he believes that friendship paid off for the detained Lynnwood man. "No doubt, our trips helped influence Kenneth Bae's release and I'm happy he is coming home safely," Rodman told TMZ.

Of course, the Worm sent that letter in January. And we're willing to bet that the head of a totalitarian regime who may or may not have fed his uncle to a pack of wild dogs isn't the type to take international diplomacy advice from someone who was once married to Carmen Electra, but who knows.
