Slide Show: PAX 2014
September 2, 2014

Nintendo was showing off it's latest incarnations of the Super Smash Brothers franchise both on Wii U...

...and on the handheld Nintendo 3DS.

The classic console room provide fans (and families) of all ages a chance to connect.

In one of the most unique promotional gimmicks of the weekend, Far Cry 4 let convention goers dress in animal suits...

...and battle one another in a steel cage for prizes.

The next big gaming breakthrough will almost assuredly be virtual reality, and the Oculus Rift headset was leading the way at PAX.

While big name publishers and console manufacturers dominated the floorspace, fans also turned out in droves to see games developed by small indie developers.

Hidden away from the main action, the classic arcade room provided fans a surprisingly peaceful reprieve from the bulk of the action.

Even inanimate objects got in on the cosplay, donning robes from the Assassin's Creed franchise.

At PAX, shirts are optional when playing demos like Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.

While they may be anonymous walking in public, professional gamers (the ones in the black and yellow hoodies) were autograph-signing, picture-taking stars at PAX.

PAX = Escalator riding. A lot of escalator riding.

As Stephen Colbert once said, "Bears are godless killing machines."

For those not in attendance, Twitch streamed much of PAX live online (including a demo of the quirky new first-person shooter Screencheat).

Mechanical bulls are so passé. Mechanical dragons now.

PAX hosted the North American regional tournament for uber-popular and professionally competitive video game League of Legends (the crowd was crazy, given that this was the reaction between actual competition).

While not front and center, there was feminist and LGBT representation at PAX.

The new cooperative title Evolve has teams of players taking down gargantuan beast like this one...

...because yikes.

If you like bright colors, explosions, monsters, and rail grinds, Microsoft's Sunset Overdrive is the game for you.

Lines for panels and special events often ran hundreds deep (this one was for a screening of Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie.

Fangamer and other merchants peddled their wares including creative T-shirt designs.

Hordes of gamers gathered around Nintendo's booth to get their hands on upcoming titles featuring classic characters (and free swag).

I choose you, Pickachu.

Lord of the Rings fans can battle the orcs of Middle-earth in the upcoming title Shadow of Mordor.

While the majority of PAX is focused on video games, the community of table top gamers (i.e. card and board games) also turns out in force.

PAX extended beyond the convention center and took over Benaroya Hall for nerdy nights of music. Acts included comedy duo Paul and Storm.
