The Best Films of SIFF 2013 Were...

SIFF spotlights the festival's award winners and audience favorites June 12–20.

By Laura Dannen June 10, 2013

Jo Lawry, Judith Hill, and Lisa Fischer get their moment in the spotlight in Twenty Feet from Stardom.

Fanie Fourie's Lobola. Our Nixon. Harmony Lessons. Twenty Feet from Stardom. C.O.G.

Did you see any of them? No? Not like there were 447 films to choose from... Thankfully, SIFF Cinema reprises the best of the 2013 festival June 12–20, including the Grand Jury prize winners C.O.G., an adaptation of David Sedaris's short story about working on an apple farm in Oregon (also the first time the humorist has allowed someone to translate his work for the big screen); Harmony Lessons, a drama about schoolyard bullying in a rural Kazakhstan village; and Our Nixon, the documentary of stitched-together Super 8 Nixon footage that caught our eye early on.

The Golden Space Needle audience award for best film went to Fanie Fourie's Lobola, a South African romantic comedy about an Afrikaans guy and a Zulu girl as star-crossed lovers. (It's a feel-good pick.) Twenty Feet from Stardom, a Sundance favorite about mind-blowing backup singers in the shadow of stars, took home the Golden Space Needle for top documentary. (Sidenote: One of the film's subjects, former Michael Jackson vocalist Judith Hill, was dominating the latest season of The Voice until her recent—shocking—departure.) Big Joy, directed by Eric Slade and Stephen Silha, won the Reel NW Award for best local film.
