Sasquatch 2013: The Postal Service, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Mumford and Sons Headline

Plus: Macklemore and Ryan Lewis surprise Seattle with a free show last night.

By Seth Sommerfeld February 5, 2013

Festival season kicked off in a big way last night at the Sasquatch! launch party—starting with the announcement that the Postal Service will, in fact, co-headline the Memorial Day weekend music festival. (See, we had nothing to worry about.) Also atop the bill: Seattle's now internationally famous hip-hop duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, folk-rockers Mumford and Sons, and Icelandic band Sigur Ros. The opening acts aren't anything to scoff at either: Vampire Weekend (now with a new album), Arctic Monkeys, the xx, the Lumineers, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Cake, and Imagine Dragons are all scheduled to play the Gorge.

Local hip-hop represents again this year with OC Notes, Kingdom Crumbs, and Brothers From Another, aka the guys in the Molly Moon's music video; rocker Reignwolf will also make an appearance. As for the comedy lineup, we're happy to see Mike Birbiglia and Parks and Recreation's Nick Offerman making the trek out. Four-day tickets ($338) go on sale to the general public this Saturday, February 9, at 10am at And they will sell out. Fast.

But the killer lineup wasn't the only buzzworthy thing to come out of last night's event at the Neptune. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis made their triumphant return home (post Letterman appearance and world tour) with a surprise appearance to perform "Thrift Shop," "Same Love," and "Can't Hold Us." Additionally, Cody ChesnuTT got the crowd fired up with some call-and-response soul and Built to Spill showed why the band is indie rock royalty with a shredding set that included covers of "Don't Fear the Reaper" and "How Soon Is Now?"
