Today’s SIFF Pick: Take This Waltz

Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen play a married couple on the brink in this indie drama.

By Seth Sommerfeld May 23, 2012

Margot (Williams) and Daniel (Rogen) face a homewrecker in Take This Waltz.

Hot-burning lust or warm, quiet love? That’s the choice at the core of Sarah Polley’s indie drama Take This Waltz. Michelle Williams plays a woman torn between her sweet, loyal husband (Seth Rogen) and her provocative neighbor Daniel (Luke Kirby). As she finds more and more reasons to get away with Daniel, scenes become packed with visual metaphors for her internal conflict, culminating in a beautiful Tilt-A-Whirl scene. And while Williams once again shows why she’s one of the industry’s most acclaimed actresses of late, it’s the warmth of Rogen’s silly-serious cookbook-writing husband that makes her noncommittal wavering feel like a gut-punch.

Screening: May 26 at 7 (Egyptian Theatre).
