Today’s SIFF Pick: Starbuck

To start, it’s Starbuck, not Starbucks. Important difference. In Ken Scott’s comedy, a middle-aged meat delivery man who’s perpetually in debt discovers that his anonymous sperm bank deposits have yielded more than he imagined for $35 a pop: 533 children, to be exact. And 142 of them want to know the identity of dear old Dad. The premise alone, alone with some quality one-liners and well-timed Poignant Moments, made this Quebecois charmer the top-grossing film in Canada in 2011. It’s already been optioned by DreamWorks for an American remake—because there’s nothing like a good sperm donor comedy to cross a cultural divide.
