Today’s SIFF Pick: Emerald City Visions (A Hip-Hop Reinterpretation of The Wiz)

Ease on down the rizzle dizzle.

By Laura Dannen May 31, 2012

This isn’t a film. It’s better than that. From the brain of Larry Mizell Jr, The Stranger music columnist and KEXP DJ, comes a live hip-hop reimagining of The Wiz at the Triple Door, which itself was a funkadelic Broadway and big-screen adaptation of The Wizard of Oz in the 1970s. Remember Diana Ross as Dorothy? Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow? Ease on down the road? It was weird and amazing, just like L. Frank Baum would want it to be. Let’s see how Mizell and Northwest hip-hop heavyweights Don’t Talk To The Cops, Metal Chocolates, and DJ DV-One urbanize Oz in our own Emerald City.
