For Crows, nearly 100 birds swarm a pair of six-panel screens, painted in gold and ink by an unknown artist in 17th-century Japan (only the left screen is depicted here). It’s one of our 10 must-see masterpieces in Seattle.

Do-Ho Suh’s new multimedia installation Gate is a one-to-one fabric replica of the entryway of his father’s home in Korea. The background features video animation incorporating elements from the exhibition. Here, crows fly through the gate and seem to land squarely inside the Crows panels just across the room.

Kano Takanobu’s The Four Accomplishments (Japanese, 1571–1618) depicts Chinese scholars mastering the four arts—music (playing the zither), painting, calligraphy, and the board game Go. The last of the four gilded door panels, pictured, shows a Taoist deity. These were likely part of the home of a warrior or wealthy merchant, says curator Catherine Roche.

Some of the Buddhist fragments and deity statues on display date 1,500 years back. Pictured: Seated Indra, a bronze set with semiprecious stones, is from 13th-century Nepal.
