Students, Go See Bela Fleck and the Flecktones

You don’t have to pay as much and it’ll be a lesson in "blu-pop."

By Laura Dannen December 9, 2010

With Victor Wooten (electric bass), Jeff Coffin (sax, flute), and Future Man (percussion), banjo master Bela Fleck continues to blur the boundaries of bluegrass, jazz, and pop. And just look at Future Man in that video — guy wears a pirate hat and plays a “synth-axe drumitar.” There isn’t a box big enough to put around these guys. Maybe that’s why the Fleck and his “blu-pop” band have won more Grammys in different categories than any other musicians.

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones play Jazz Alley all weekend (Thu-Sun, 7:30 & 10). Tickets are $50 and reservations are required, but if you’re a student, you get $35 tickets to the 10pm Thursday and Sunday shows. To reserve seats, call 206-441-9729; don’t forget your student ID the night of the show.
