Seattleite to Star in New NBC Sitcom

Nick Thune
Saw this over on tvweek.com: Seattle native Nick Thune—a comedian who, in my humble opinion, outfunnied national act Mike Birbiglia at the Moore last month—is slated to star in a new NBC sitcom in development by a Seinfeld guy. But not just any Seinfeld guy: Spike Feresten, who won an Emmy (and our eternal devotion) with his "Soup Nazi" episode. Thune will headline an ensemble cast of twentysomethings in LA—which seems quite the stretch for Thune, an early-thirtysomething now living in LA—and serve as co-executive producer. I’ll keep an eye out for any updates, and until then, hope that the show comes soon enough to replace Outsourced.
In other news: Former Intiman artistic director Bart Sher debuted his new Broadway musical—an adaptation of Pedro Almodóvar’s madcap 1988 film Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown —to mixed reviews. Like the critics themselves were torn, wanting so badly for the play to succeed that many reviews read like giant sighs.
Except for the The New York Times, which called for a dose of Ritalin after seeing Women: " [It feels] hopelessly distracted from beginning to end. It keeps changing directions the way a teenage girl changes clothes before a first date," wrote Ben Brantley.
The LA Times vacillated between complimenting the cast—"a glittering constellation of theatrical divas" that includes Patti LuPone—and trashing the score by David Yazbek (The Full Monty). "It’s a missed opportunity that I’m glad I didn’t miss." There you … have it?
Time Out New York’s Adam Feldman said it brimmed with colorful bits and pieces, but that the show ultimately couldn’t find a rhythm. He used the phrase "higgledy-piggledy," which I think we should all try to use at least once today.
