Met Picks: Twyla Tharp at PNB, Flamenco, Reykjavik Calling

DANCE PNB reprises its popular All (Twyla) Tharp program from 2008—including two commissions just for PNB. “I only work with people who are highly talented,” Tharp told us back in ’08. Is it possible to feel flattery by association? On the bill: Brahms’s Opus 111, Vladimir Martynov’s Afternoon Ball, and the playful Waterbaby Bagatelles. Nov 5-14.
DANCE Fiery foot-stomping. Spanish guitar. Flowing crimson skirts. Casa Patas’s flamenco performance at Benaroya Hall sold out in days last year—is it any surprise? A few tickets remain for this weekend’s show. Nov 5-7.
CONCERT Seattle and Reykjavik make nice in Reykjavik Calling, a FREE showcase of their cities’ talent at the Crocodile, featuring Rachel Flotard of Visqueen, John Roderick of the Long Winters, Jason Dodson of the Maldives, Nathan Wade, and Iceland’s finest. Nov 5.
CONCERT It’s hard to categorize Stew and the Negro Problem. Stew and his cohort Heidi Rodewald play funk, rock, a little Afro-baroque. They even make Broadway musicals together. They’re at the Triple Door this weekend, on their first national tour in six years. Nov 5 & 6.
VISUAL ART Today’s First Thursday, and at the Henry, comedian-artist Harry Shearer has curated footage of talking heads and politicians in those unscripted moments before they go on air. Sean Hannity? Silent? It happens. Harry Shearer: The Silent Echo Chamber is on display through January 16.
COMEDY The Seattle International Comedy Competition kicked off yesterday, and we got two of the top local contenders to give us a preview of their schtick. Nov 3-28.
FILM FEST Get to know your neighbors during Couch Fest, when strangers open up their homes to more strangers to view short films and eat snacks. It’s…so…simple. Nov 7.
CLASSICAL & MORE Lake Union Civic Orchestra dedicates its season opener to George Shangrow, founder of the Seattle Chamber Singers and Orchestra Seattle who died in a car crash this August. They’ll play Beethoven’s Symphony no. 8 in F Major and Shostakovich’s Symphony no. 12 in D Minor at Town Hall. Nov 5.
CLASSICAL & MORE Fleet-fingered André Watts, one of the great pianists of our time, joins Seattle Symphony for Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto. Nov 4-6.
