The Return of Soundgarden
After nearly 13 years of solo projects and glorious spinoffs (ahh, Audioslave), Seattle’s rock rainmakers Soundgarden returned to the mainstage on Sunday to close out music fest Lollapalooza in Chicago. Sounds like it was all rock, no frills, with enough career hits to make people happy (‘Black Hole Sun,’ ‘Blow Up the Outside World,’ ‘Fell On Black Days.’) Rolling Stone called their set ‘explosive’ and made literary love to Kim Thayil, saying he ‘proved he’s one of rock’s greatest guitarists.’ (Agree? Disagree? What would Eric Clapton say?) Spin thought they "looked, and sounded, more or less as we left them," and wondered if that was a good thing. Billboard thought Arcade Fire’s simultaneous return on the other side of Grant Park was more triumphant.
But we here at Seattle Met know it wasn’t Soundgarden’s real comeback. That was on April 16 at Showbox at the Market.
