Opening Tonight: The Female of the Species

ACT Theatre’s latest mainstage play pokes fun at feminism.

By Laura Dannen June 18, 2010

In Joanna Murray-Smith’s send-up of feminism (loosely based on a true story), the author of The Cerebral Vagina gets handcuffed to her desk by a gun-toting disgruntled former student, prompting an exchange of barbs on gender politics. Director Allison Narver is calling The Female of the Species a “madcap farce,” which, according to the almighty Google, has also been used to describe a shocking number of British plays, including No Sex Please, We’re British, and pretty much every Shakespeare comedy ever written. TFoTS is in good company.

All kidding aside, I have high hopes for this Seattle premiere, and will post again after seeing the show next Tuesday. Tickets are $37.50 at acttheatre.org.
