Lots of great local, indie and roots bands playing this weekend…Tractor Tavern alone has Grand Archives tonight and Hey Marseilles on Saturday. (Hey Marseilles also plays the Vera Project on Friday night, before heading down the West Coast to tour behind their remastered, re-released album, To Travel & Trunks.)
Competing for your attention: The Moondoggies play Neumos tonight, and the ever-entertaining School of Rock covers Syd Barrett/Pink Floyd Saturday at Vera.
Head Like a Kite joins forces with Caffe Vita to release organic coffee and a limited-edition white vinyl version of their new album, Dreams Suspend Night, on Friday at Neumos.
How much of a good thing is too much? Do I camp out in Ballard all weekend, or on a couch at the Vera Project? Tough call—so rather than hem and haw, I asked Kyla Fairchild, co-publisher of go-to roots music mag No Depression (now nodepression.com), to choose for me.
Kyla by email: Personally, I’m torn between The Moondoggies, Hey Marseilles, Grand Archives, Joy Kills Sorrow and Lost in the Trees. I’ve seen the Moondoggies, Hey Marseilles and Grand Archives many times and they never disappoint, so you can’t go wrong with any of those. Lost in the Trees was recommended to me at SXSW and I kept missing them. They’re on Anti, a record label that consistently puts out great records, so that alone makes me curious. [They play the Crocodile on Saturday.] I’ve been hearing excellent things about Joy Kills Sorrow and their new record is top notch; they’re from Boston and their tour makes a stop at the Tractor on Sunday.
“But if I had to choose just one, it would be Hey Marseilles at the Tractor.”
Done. We’ll see you there.
